Summer Heat Is the Real Stress Test for Sustainable Commercial Refrigeration
When the weather gets warmer, you know it changes how you feel. Summer has a way of finding the weak spots in people and in refrigeration technology.
A case that ran just fine in March can start sweating, icing, drifting in temperature, or working harder than it should once the store gets busier and ambient temperatures climb. Commercial refrigeration problems don’t always appear as a sudden, large failure - sometimes they arrive in small steps, like a compressor running longer, a coil getting dirtier, product temperatures creeping up, or doors getting opened hundreds of times a day during peak traffic.
For grocers, convenience stores, foodservice operators, and mass merchants, summer is where sustainable commercial refrigeration earns its keep.
The goal is simply to keep products at safe, consistent temperatures while protecting food quality, using energy wisely, and avoiding the kind of breakdown that causes a major interruption of service.
Heat makes refrigeration work harder
Higher ambient temperatures put more pressure on refrigerated display cases and CO2 refrigeration systems. More heat in the store means more heat the system has to remove. More door openings mean more warm, humid air entering the case. More humidity can mean more condensation, more frost, and more stress on airflow.
That’s why maintenance matters so much in the summer.
Kysor Warren’s cleaning and maintenance guidance notes that display cases are built to perform in air-conditioned stores where conditions are maintained at a maximum of 75°F dry-bulb temperature and 55% relative humidity. The same manual warns that failing to maintain design conditions can lead to increased BTUH load, high product temperature, coil icing, product frosting, and external sweating.
Maintenance is easy to skip over as it doesn’t directly affect your bottom line, but it is a practical step. And in refrigeration, practical steps are usually what save you money.
Clean coils are not optional
Maintenance is never a priority until something goes wrong, and by then it’s too late - it becomes a repair instead of simple maintenance.
Condenser coils need attention. During warmer months, dirt, dust, and blocked airflow can make a system work harder than it should. Kysor Warren’s maintenance guidance for self-contained cases recommends monthly cleaning and states that compressed air should be blown through the evaporator once a month to clear debris and dust, in the opposite direction of the normal airflow. It also warns against blocking airflow at the louvers or at the rear of the case, as restricted airflow can cause overheating and shutdowns.
That’s the kind of maintenance that does not look urgent until it suddenly is.
A monthly maintenance checklist should cover:
- Clean condenser and evaporator areas according to equipment guidance
- Keep discharge and return grilles clear
- Check that product is not stocked beyond the load line
- Keep airflow paths open
- Inspect drains for debris
- Watch for icing, sweating, or temperature drift
- Confirm fans are operating properly
- Shut off power before cleaning or servicing where required
